Divorce Cop is an interesting concept, let alone an interesting name.
Needing a break from touring and travelling with other projects, and wanting to spend more time with family, drummer Chris Gervais (of Nice Life and Toothbrush) decided to start recording short, poor-quality drum tracks on his phone while off from his overnight job and while his son was at school. He sent them out to musician friends who might be interested in a long-distance collaboration, with a sound akin to minimal, lo-fi punk from the 80s and early 90s. The two people who immediately clicked with the sound and understood the project were guitarist/vocalist Brock Ginther (Kid Pedestrian, Midwestern Medicine) and bassist Anthony Bitetti (drummer for Great Western Plain) -- not only both on board from the start, but also both two people with important family obligations, similar to Gervais.
What came about from the handful of long-distance recordings (captured on a handful of different devices ranging from phones, computers and multi-trackers) is a paranoid, off-kilter collection of minimal no-wave, with tinges of southern speed/"cow punk" (similar to the early releases from Meat Puppets) and haunting post-rock. Their first EP, "What?", is a blistering 5-song, 5-minute assault that will only be available through the band's personal bandcamp on Friday, May 31st. Their second EP, which contains 8 unreleased songs from these same sessions, will be released in October.
